This idea is comforting in its own way — it explains outcomes without requiring anyone to examine effort, habits, or teaching methods. Skills like mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension, and pattern recognition — the exact areas tested in competitive entrance exams — are built through practice far more than they are fixed by birth. A child who appears "naturally gifted" at age ten has usually had more early exposure to books, puzzles, numbers, or encouraging feedback than a peer who hasn't. What looks like innate talent is very often accumulated practice that started earlier or felt less like work.

Believing in fixed ability also changes how children respond to difficulty. A child who thinks intelligence is fixed tends to see a wrong answer as proof of a limitation and may avoid challenging problems to protect their self-image.
