Why Memorization Feels Like the Safe Bet

Rote learning is tempting because it produces fast, visible results. A child who memorizes multiplication tables, formulas, or definitions can recall them quickly, which feels like solid progress — especially when time before the exam is short. For generations, memorization has been the default study method in many households and schools, so it's a familiar, trusted approach.

The trouble is that competitive entrance exams for reasoning, math, and language rarely ask questions in the exact form a child memorized them. They test whether a concept can be applied to a new, slightly different situation. A child who has memorized "area of a rectangle = length × width" without understanding why can get stuck the moment a question wraps that formula inside a word problem or asks about a shape made of two rectangles joined together.

Memorized information is also more fragile under stress. Recall-based knowledge tends to be the first thing that slips away when a child is nervous, whereas understanding — knowing why something works — tends to hold up better because it can be reconstructed even if the exact memory fades.
